In 1991, amidst the Balkan region’s dissolution and prompted by the unfolding events, 6-year-old Maja and her parents, make the decision to jouney from Yugoslavia to Denmark. However, their encounter with the promised land proves to be challenging ordeal for the small family, particularly for Maja. She observes in wonder as her parents desperately try to adapt to an entirely new world with its peculiar rules and traditions. But soon they realize that their new home is far from the fairytale land they dreamed of. Maja witnessing her parents’ difficulties, quickly learns Danish and consequently shoulders the responsibility of an adult to support them.

It all begins as a typical school trip. A bus, school friends, professors, casual jokes, small excitements, and the well-known temporary sense of freedom children get when traveling. But gradually we start to feel that it is not well in that small community. Daily glances, teasing, and silences hide something nobody wants to talk about. Zoza is burdened by the death of his best friends who committed suicide three weeks before the school trip. When he decides to talk about his school friend’s failure to speak up, their decision to turn their gaze away and about brutal mistreatment of his friend, all attention turns to him.

Guti (35) and Sig (50) wake up beaten, hungover, and handcuffed together on a riverbank near Ljubljana. Sig, obviously a tourist, suffers from memory loss and can’t remember where he is from and why he is – as he thinks – stuck in Slovakia. Together with Guti, they embark on a journey to recover Sig’s passport and identity and, in the meantime, work on Guti’s dream project: a river raft that will hopefully rebuild Guti’s life that has fallen victim to bad divorce, failed bank loans, vicious bureaucracy, and many, many bad neighbors.

‘No Fairy Dust’ is a modern Cinderella that follows Marija, an ice skater who lives with her father on the outskirts of Belgrade. Crushed by grief because her mother died, Marija can’t express her flaming sexuality. Her father gets close to a woman who moves in with her two daughters. Marija supports her father but realizes she can’t trust her stepmother. Because of financial troubles, Marija is forced to find new jobs that introduce her to the world in which women are exploited. Her stepmother has anger outbursts that escalate into fisical abuse. However, the love of the most desirable young businessman gives her strength to accept herself and her sexuality.

The sisters clash when Tonina secretly buys out a part of the family’s island house from a cousin, even though the sisters had agreed to buy it together.

Inspector Deja Kolenc builds the case on instinct, while Maksimilijan Sotler, a coldly precise insurance investigator, approaches the same crime from the opposite side. Slowly, the structure behind the robbery begins to surface, leading to a mayoral campaign, a silence financier, and a document that powerful men will kill for. As Sonja’s memory gradually returns, one beat at a time, she is forced to choose between the truth and the only person she cares about.
